Luggage carousels

After passing through immigration process would be getting your check-in luggage from the respective luggage carousels. At the carousels, you can see luggage trolleys, which is free of charge to use them. There are also porter boys who offer their services to get your check-in luggage. The porter boys services is NOT FREE!

Customs and Excise

After you have collected your check-in luggage, you have to pass through Customs checkpoint. At this checkpoint, the Customs officer on duty will ask you for your Customs Declaration form you have filled out on board the aircraft. Then the officer on duty will ask you to put your hand luggage into the scanner for scanning but not your check in luggage. Very strange.

Meeting Point

If your final destination is Jakarta, following the walkway after Customs and Excise checkpoint will lead you to the meeting point. This walkway to exit to the meeting point is also the same walkway that leads you to the transit to domestic check-in counters, as mentioned above. Along the walkway, you will see counters on your right. The people in the counter will call out to take their services like taxi limousines, hotel etc etc. When you walk pass the glass door, you find yourself in an open area. This is the meeting point. There will be plenty of people standing around waiting to pick up the passengers/relatives/friends etc. If you are being picked up and there is no placard stating your name, the easy point would be McDonald’s.

Taxi Service

Taxis in Jakarta are generally not safe. There is only 2-3 reliable taxi service. The most popular would be Silverbird and Bluebird. Both of them are in the same group of public transport companies. They also consist of Goldenbird limousine, Bigbird bus, Gamya etc etc.

Silverbird

The significant identity of this taxi is they are usually luxury cars like Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Crown,

Toyota Alphard. They are all in black with the Silverbird logo painted on the front doors of the vehicle, and the drivers wear grey short sleeve bush jacket and trousers as their uniform. There is a Silverbird counter outside the open covered area. There is a Silverbird counter/booth with attendants on duty that wears a blue and yellow patterned vest with white shirt and tie. These attendants speak some English. The taxi drivers too are very courteous. Last known flag down rate starts at IDR 9,000 and 15

Jakarta City, Express and Tiara Express

Their taxis are white in colour with the logo painted at the both front doors of the vehicle. Flagdown rate is the same as Bluebird’s.

As for their Tiara Express, it is slightly cheaper than Silverbird. At the time of writing, the flagdown rate is IDR10,000. The usual vehicles are Toyota Alphards. However there is a minimum charge of IDR50,000

Other taxis and Bluebird copycats

For these taxis, you take at your own risk. Bluebird copycats are taxis painted in blue with logos that look like Bluebird. Flagdown rates is the same as Bluebirds but then you never know the condition of their vehicle, the meter use, and the attitude of the taxi drivers!! So BE WARNED....

Going into Jakarta City from Soekarno-Hatta

There is only one highway between the airport and Jakarta City. You have to pass through 2 paying tolls. Between the paying tolls there is a toll that has been abandoned or closed. Previously this toll too you have to pay when you pass through.

The journey would depend on the time of the day, traffic on the road and the weather condition. Under normal weather condition with blue clear sky, high traffic would usually be early in the morning (between 07:30 hours and 09:30 hours), when people are going to work, in the afternoon (between 11:30 hours and 14:30 hours) when going for lunch break and late in the afternoon early evening, when people leave work for home (between 16:30 hours and 19:00 hours). These hours would have busy traffic closer to the airport.

Going to the airport

Remember the traffic! From Jakarta city, there is only 1 route highway to/from the airport. It is a 4 lane highway, generally. 2 lane going to and 2 lane coming from the airport. The size, as in the width, of the highway single lane is about 75-80% of a single lane of Malaysian roads.

So, during high traffic, a 2 lane can become 4-5 lane!

When you are going to the airport, try to go as early as possible, say 1.5 hours before check in time. As a general rule, international flight check ins are 2 hours before flight time. If and when the day you are leaving is raining, go even much earlier!

UPDATE!!

Now there are airport transfer buses which are yellow in colour. Make sure you get onto the correct bus. Look out for the signboard that says Terminal 1 <-> Terminal 2, Terminal 2 <-> Terminal 3, and Terminal 3 <-> Terminal 1. They are FREE service.

Low Cost Carrier Terminal - Terminal 3

The previous post was about International flights that embarks at Terminal 2. Terminal 3 was supposedly use for Haj pilgrimage.

On 15 November 2011, all AirAsia and Mandala Airlines operate from Terminal 3.

For Terminal 3, there is no sky bridge to connect between the aircraft and the terminal, like in Terminal 2. When you disembark from the aircraft, there are buses to take you from the aircraft to the Arrival hall entrance in Terminal 3.

Public bus

There are a few public buses plying routes around Jakarta. Looking at the condition of the buses, try not to take them. Even locals find it is not safe to use them. The public bus service standards that is considered safest would be Transjakarta. Their "Halte" (that is how they call bus stop in Indonesia), is located right in the middle of the road. Mainly around the centre of Jakata. Say like Jl Jend Sudirman, Jl Hayam Wuruk etc. South Jakarta, you use the other public bus service.

Angkut

Local minibus. Don't expect the size of the minibus to be like Toyota Minibus from Japan. Even our old minibus that ply the routes in KL some 15-30 years ago are much bigger than what they have in Jakarta or the entire Indonesia. These "Angkut"s can be found all over Indonesia as their minibus. They use converted Toyota Kijangs. They are the previously Unser and now the Innova. Sitting arrangement is in bench placed around body panel. The back passenger doors has been converted into body panels making one door open to get in and out. So, you have to squeeze in with a sitting capacity of say 12-14 people. No ticket will be issued. It is manned by a single man. The driver is also the conductor. No bells to ring for you to get down. You have to call out the driver to stop.

Travelling to another place that is not familiar to you would require plenty of homework to be done and planning as detailed as possible.

When you are going to Jakarta for fun for say 3 days 2 night, you would very much like to maximise your stay. However, Jakarta is not like Bangkok or Hatyai. Jakarta city is some 3 times larger than KL.

When you see or read some where that says JABOTABEK or JABODETABEK, it is a short form. The former is means JAkarta BOgor TAngerang BEkasi and the latter JAkarta BOgor DEpok TAngerang BEkasi. If you have a map of Greater Jakarta, then you can see how wide and large Jakarta is. Jakarta by large is very flat in nature. Not many high rise buildings. High rise buildings are very much centred around West Jakarta and Central Jakarta. If and when Jakarta grows, and every where around the current area of Jakarta you find high rise building, you can roughly guess the population would be something like 150 million people! Jakarta is known for their infamous traffic. So, when you plan your 3D2N trip, do not squeeze as many places as you can into that 3 days 2 nights. You will be disappointed and your plans will go astray. Places that you intend to visit are not next door to each other. They are very scattered around Jakarta. Even though you may find they are close by, and you are not superman that would reach your next destination in seconds. Getting from one place to another can be stressful and painful. REMEMBER the traffic!
